PhD PROGRAMME AT IIT GANDHINAGAR

IIT Gandhinagar offers a broad-based PhD program that strengthens the fundamentals through rigorous 
coursework 
and provides intensive exposure to specific fields of research. Students are expected to learn the general 
philosophy, methods, and concepts of scholarly inquiry, while acquiring specialized knowledge in their area 
of focus.

CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING
First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC / ST) in:

BTech/MTech or equivalent degree in Chemical Engineering OR B.Tech.
/M.Tech.
 or equivalent degree in other branches of Engineering may be considered 
in areas consistent with the research areas of the department OR M.Sc. in 
disciplines consistent with the research areas of the department.
CHEMISTRY
First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC / ST) in:

M. Sc. or equivalent degree in Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic and General)
CIVIL ENGINEERING
First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC / ST) in:

B.Tech. / M.Tech or equivalent degree in Civil Engineering
COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC / ST) in:

BTech/MTech or equivalent degree in Computer Science or MSc in 
Mathematics with good score in GATE/NBHM/CSIR.
COGNITIVE SCIENCE, ENGLISH, PHILOSOPHY 
First Class or 55% marks (50% for SC / ST) in:

M.A. / M.Com. or equivalent degree OR Master’s degree in Science 
/ Graduate Engineering / Technology may be considered for research areas 
 consistent with the academic background and special interests OR M.Phil. 
degree in any of the disciplines or in any allied subjects
ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING
First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC / ST) in:

B.E. / B.Tech. / M.E. / M.Tech. or equivalent degree in Computer 
Science, Computer Science & Engineering, Computer Engineering, 
Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Engineering 
Physics, Telecommunication Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, 
Biomedical Engineering, or related areas. Such candidates are eligible for
 research areas consistent with their academic background and special i
nterests OR Master of Science in Mathematics, Physics and Electronics 
with an interest in Electrical Engineering Sciences.



MECHANICAL
ENGINEERING
First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC / ST) in:

B.Tech. / M.Tech or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering OR 
 B.Tech/ M.Tech degree or equivalent in Production Engineering / 
Industrial Engineering/ Aerospace Engineering OR  B.Tech. / M.Tech. 
Degree in other branches of Engineering / Technology with an outstanding 
academic record may also be considered for research areas consistent with
 their academic background and special interests of the Department.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Admission is generally offered on the basis of an interview, which may be supplemented by a written test. 
Only limited number of candidates will be invited for interview/written test, based on academic records 
and research interest compatibility of candidates with available faculty expertise. All candidates 
called for the Test/Interview are paid to and fro single second-sleeper class railway fare by the shortest
 route from their place of residence to the Institute/ venue of the Test / Interview. They have to produce evidence
 (railway ticket) in support of their claim.

ADMISSION CATEGORIES

Regular (RR): Fulltime residential researcher candidate

External (ET): Candidates serving in educational/research institutions/industry. External candidates must 
furnish their employers consent (see Annexure 1) at the time of interview.

Read the instructions given in the brochure carefully before you fill in the application form.

You need to furnish all the documentary evidences in original (testimonials, certificates, publications, 
work experience and research/professional experience) at the time of interview. 
Incomplete applications 
will be rejected.There are no application fees. Please note that the deadline of application 
submission is April 15,
